The Alberta AISH Application Checklist
Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) can be life-changing, but the application is detailed and easy to get wrong. Use this checklist to prepare a complete, strong application.
1 · Confirm you meet the basic eligibility
- You are 18 or older and under 65.
- You are an Alberta resident and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- You have a medical condition that is the substantial cause of your inability to earn a living, and is likely permanent.
- Your income and assets are within AISH limits.
2 · Gather your personal documents
- Government-issued photo ID and proof of Alberta residency.
- Social Insurance Number.
- Banking information for direct deposit.
- Information on income, assets, and any other benefits you receive.
- Your partner's income/asset details, if applicable.
3 · Prepare the medical information
- List every diagnosis, condition, and the providers treating you.
- Ask your physician/specialist to complete the medical report fully. Vague reports are a top cause of denial.
- Include how your condition affects daily living and your ability to work.
- Attach supporting records: specialist letters, test results, hospital summaries.
4 · Strengthen your application
- Describe a typical day and your real limitations. Don't understate them.
- Be consistent: your description and the medical reports should tell the same story.
- Keep copies of everything you submit.
- Note submission dates and any deadlines.
5 · After you apply
- Respond promptly to any request for more information.
- If you're denied, there are review options with strict deadlines; act quickly and seek the right help.
- A denial often means something was missing, not that you don't qualify.
